Bloodhounds sniffing for humans
Humans on the run!
Due to a legislation change, hunting enthusiasts in the UK can no longer use dogs to hunt foxes. The hunting enthusiasts had an idea! Now Homo sapiens get a half-hour running start and the bloodhounds follow in pursuit!
Washington Post article
You might find this reminiscent of the short story The Most Dangerous Game. Zaroff, a nutty hunter living alone on an island (always a bad idea for sanity), has moved away from hunting large game and now pursues humans. Zaroff squares off against Rainsford, another hunter, and lots of cool things happen and then someone "wins" by staying alive (read it, it's great!).
I love the creativity of the UK hunters! Some humans like to run, others like to chase and these dogs are motivated by seeking. And in this new version, it appears that no human or non-human animal dies at the end!
In urban environments, owners encourage seeking behavior by providing "appropriate" outlets. Many dog owners rely on puzzle games or rolling food "bowls" which allow dogs to engage their inner canine selves. Making sure dogs engage in seeking and exploratory behaviors could help deter dogs from gobbling up toilet paper or the bathroom garbage in their spare time (such good smells!).
But back to the UK. Maybe the Hash House Harriers will get in on this. They're always up for a challenge!
